The beginnings of TikTok

The story begins in August 2018. when Chinese company ByteDance moved the users from the father of TikTok, an app called Musical.ly.

TikTok is a video-sharing app where users create and share 15s, the 60s, 3min, and now 10min videos, on any topic.

Therefore, it’s the app for challenges, DIY, dance videos, magic tricks, how-to videos, and funny videos. 

Instagram makes the path easier for people to become photographers. And that is the true value of Instagram. That pretty much explains why TikTok succeeded. Simply put, Tik Tok is a magic wand that transformed us all into CONTENT CREATORS. 

In October 2018, TikTok was crowned by the Apple store as the most-downloaded video and photo app, globally.

The trickiest algorithm of all

TikTok has a pretty unique algorithm, different from all others. The feed called For You is personalized for every individual user. The focus is on the information of likes and dislikes, and at the end of that strict filter are the relevant videos you actually want to see. And that goes beyond the categories, this filter machine selects all the content in the same direction.

A small subset of users is the first who encounter your uploaded video. The algorithm listens to their reaction to decide if your video will be limited or has the potential to become viral.

That is to say, positive signs are watching the video longer than others, sharing, liking. After the positive reaction of a small group of unaware judges, a larger group will start consuming that video.  

In short, those are not the small steps for building an organic content culture.

  • Engagement stats– Let’s see the self-explaining example: Jennifer Lopez posted the exact video on Twitter and TikTok. The video on Twitter got only 2 million views from 45 million followers. But the video rock on TikTok with 71 million views off 5 million followers.

Political negativity around TikTok

On the other hand, Donald Trump as the president of the USA tried to use some of the Tik Tok revenue by, threatening to ban it in the United States in 2020 unless Bytedance let an American company, buy TikTok US. No success there because federal judges block the request.

Secondly, the next problem was when India’s government banned the app in June 2020. The ban officially started in January 2021.

Moreover, in Southeast Asia, election battles move on TikTok as propagandists’ new tool for winning the elections.

Also, the media started seriously condemning TikTok for allowing extremism to be on its platform. And now the sensitive content with prose and cons for war in Ukrania.
